Defragmentation (defrag) can fix a slow computer
On your computer there are built in files. Whenever you use the computer, there is information that can be thought of as papers that are filed into the appropriate files on your computer. All of this is done automatically, not including the files you create for your information. While you are using your computer the information automatically goes into a file. The problem is that when you run a computer program, it must access this information (or pages) and they may be located on different ends of the computer hard drive. The pages (information) get pulled from file to file which completely disorganizes the “file system” of the computer.
Your computer also has a built in defragmentation system. When you run this program is it called “defragging” the computer. It basically puts the files into a more organized and convenient place for the system to be able to find it when it needs it to run a program. This puts information back into recognizable chunks which leaves more open space on your hard drive. Once there is freer and open space, the computer runs more quickly since it does not have to search for each piece of information.
Since all information that goes through a computer is put into these files, the more information you have, the more you need to defrag the computer. In fact, the more you defragment the computer and organize the informational files, the longer your computer will run correctly. It actually increases the lifespan of your computer.
On most computers you can find the defragmentation tool by accessing the Start, then going to control panel and choosing the system maintenance/defragmentation. You can also use a “C prompt” by typing in “defrag”.
Most people notice a big difference once they defragment their computers. It is best to develop a habit of doing it so that the files and information in your computer stay organized and the computer continues to run optimally. If you have never done defragmentation on your computer, it may take hours to perform the first time. It should take significantly less time each defrag you do after the initial one. Experts disagree on how often you should defrag your computer but most agree you should not do it more than once per week and should not wait longer than once per month. Choose a time when you will more than likely be sleeping, working or otherwise engaged and not using the computer.
Defragmentation is another tool that when used correctly can help extend the life and performance of your computer. You should not obsess about it, but be regular with the routine. These tools are developed to help your computer run more quickly and efficiently so you may as well take advantage of them. Remember that the first time you use the defragmentation tool it may take hours (from 4-24 depending on how much information must be defragmented). You will have to be patient. It won’t take as long next time.
